Reuters reports that during his inauguration ceremony, hundreds of the supporters of his main political rival, Mirhossein Mousavi, gathered near parliament to protest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election.
The now-familiar Iranian riot police were out in force in once again in an attempt to disburse the crowds. “They were chanting Allah-u Akbar (God is greatest) and Mousavi we support you,” said a witness.
In a symbolic protest, President Barack Obama and the leaders of France, Britain, Italy and Germany have decided not to congratulate Ahmadinejad on his re-election.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “We don’t always get to deal with the government that we want to.”
“We take the reality that the person who was inaugurated today will be considered the president. But we appreciate and we admire the continuing resistance and ongoing efforts by the reformers to make the changes that the Iranian people deserve,” she added.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is now under attack from both factions.
Up through last Friday, Tehran has been seized with protests and demonstrations by opposition supporters who claim he stole last month’s election from pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.
The election results were made official and were strongly defended by the ruling Iranian hard-liners who have spent the last few weeks lambasting Mousavi and his supporters for challenging the presidential election.
Now, in a strange turn of events, Ahmadinejad came under criticism from his own hard-line supporters Sunday for appointing Esfandiar Rahim Mashai as first vice president. It is the same Mashai who once caused an outcry by saying Iranians were “friends of all people in the world — even Israelis.”
Many in Iran consider Israel to be Iran’s archenemy – Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly called for the Jewish state’s destruction.
Hossein Shariatmadari, an aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and editor of hard-line Kayhan newspaper, said Sunday that Mashai’s appointment caused “a wave of surprise mixed with regret and concern” among Ahmadinejad supporters.
“Many of the closest individuals to the president strongly oppose the appointment,” he added.
According to the AP, Mashai also angered many of Iran’s top clerics in 2007 when he attended a ceremony in [...]

Violent protests over the alleged rigging of the Presidential Election on June 12 continue in Iran.

Thousands of opposition protesters flooded the streets in Tehran, undaunted by a warning from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, not to continue demonstrations.
Security forces responded with live rounds, batons and tear gas. Witnesses said that dozens of people were hospitalized after being beaten by police and the pro-government Basiji militia. Pandemonium continued well into the night Saturday and demonstrations are expected to resume as evening approaches in Tehran.

This image from a widely-circulated YouTube video shows an unnamed young woman who died from a bullet to the heart during Saturday’s crackdown. It is unclear who shot her and if she was a participant or bystander, but many believe she is a victim of the regime’s brutality. Given the name Neda, meaning “Voice” or “Call” in Farsi, she has become a rallying cry for protesters enraged by the government’s violence.

Iran’s state media has said at least 13 people were killed Saturday during the demonstration. The Iranian government has admitted to the deaths of at least 20 people in the unrest since the June 12 election.
