Letterman Apologizes To Regina While Joking About Affairs

CNN reported on David Letterman’s mea culpa Monday night – apologizing to his wife Regina who, he said, had been “horribly hurt by my behavior.”
“Either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me,” he told the audience.
The apology came about 15 minutes into the show, but Letterman fired self-deprecating zinger after zinger as soon as he strode on stage and began his opening monologue.
CNN captured some of the following Letterman quips from his Late Show:
“I mean, I’ll be honest with you folks,” he said. “Right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail. I got in the car this morning — and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me.”
Letterman added it was fall in the city and that he spent the weekend “raking my hate mail.”
“And it’s cold, too,” he said. “I mean chilly outside my house, chilly inside my house.”
The audience burst into laughter.
What about his wife?
Sure he attempted a public apology to his wife, but he also degenerated into a monologue sprinkled with “jokes” about his sordid affairs.
He was successful in eliciting the desired guffaws that erupted in response to his hilarious insensitivity. The only fallout is a ratings increase for The late Show.
To apologize and at the same time, in a crass cavalier manner, dismiss one’s behavior with a series of jokes, deserves one response from us all:
Shut Up and Go Away!
