Lieberman Opposes Public Option

According to the Briefing Room, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) has previously said that he opposes a public option plan for consumers in a healthcare reform plan to emerge from the Senate.
“I don’t favor a public option,” Lieberman told Bloomberg News in an interview back in June. “ And I don’t favor a public option because I think there’s plenty of competition in the private insurance market.”
“I think it’s a real mistake to try to jam through the total health insurance reform, health care reform plan that the public is either opposed to or of very, very passionate mixed minds about,” Lieberman recently said.
Lieberman’s vote is critical to the 60 that will be needed to overcome any attempts by oponents to filibuster the Democrat’s health care reforms. His support is even more important now since the absence due to illness of Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and Robert Byrd, D-W.Va.
