South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has admitted that he did not vote for Florida Quarterback TimTebow for the pre-season All-SEC football team.

Spurrier, who like Tebow also won the Heisman Trophy as a Florida Quarterback, said it was a mistake due to miscommunication with the Director of Football Operations Jamie Speronis.

Tebow, recipient of the 2007 Heisman Trophy, was named first team quarterback by ten coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players, so players who recieve 11 votes are unanimous.

“I didn’t do much voting at all. I didn’t fill the sheet out,” Spurrier said Friday morning. “I thought ‘Some coach made a serious, dumb or careless mistake by not having Tim Tebow as the first selection.’ When all this came out and I read in the Thursday paper I thought ‘Who was that?’

According to Spurrier’s statement, South Carolina’s director of football operations filled out the ballot several weeks ago and brought it to Spurrier for approval. Spurrier said he glanced at it — “I didn’t glance very thoroughly” — and signed off on it.

Spurrier, who lost sleep because of the mix-up, phoned Charles Bloomof the SEC office to ask if he could change his vote. Bloom allowed it, so technically Tebow now joins Tennessee safety Eric Berry, LSU tackle Ciron Black and Alabama receiver Julio Jones as unanimous selections.

“It’s my fault. I take full responsibility,” Spurrier said. “We screwed it up pretty badly. … Tim Tebow is not only the best quarterback in this league, but I think the best in the country.”
