John P Galligan, retired Army colonel and former Fort Hood military judge, has been hired to represent the officer accused of the shooting rampage that left 13 dead and 31 wounded last week at the military base in Texas.

Galligan announced Monday that he has been retained by the family of Major Nidal Milak Hasan and is currently in San Antonio where Hasan is being treated at the Brooke Army Medical Center.

Galligan said that Hasan was conscious and communicating with hospital staff. He said that he intends to see that his client’s rights are protected and declined to discuss Hasan’s motive or possible defense strategy.

Galligan has been in private practice since retiring from the Army, his cases consist primarily of court martials and military discharges.
