The court in Perugia, Italy, sentenced American student Amanda Knox to 26 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of murdering her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, during a drunken sex game.  Her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was sentenced to 25 years for his part in the murder.

Rudy Guede, an Ivorian with a criminal record, was sentenced in October 2008 to 30 years in jail for taking part in Kercher’s murder.

Reuters  reported that Knox was accused of killing 21-year-old Kercher, who was found semi-naked with her throat slit in the bedroom of her apartment in Perugia, where she was doing a year of overseas study.

Prosecutors accused Knox of persuading Guede and Sollecito to take part in an extreme sex game involving Kercher, which turned violent.  They said Knox was furious at Kercher’s criticism of her lack of cleanliness and her promiscuity.

According to Reuters, prosecutors sought life for the defendants, but a jury handed them lesser sentences after 14 hours of deliberation because they were young and had no criminal records.

It must be very hard to be the loving innocent father of a child found guilty of a murder. So many victims, so much sadness. It is my guess that the Fox family will go to their graves believing in Amanda’s innocence. But we were not there at that terrible crime scene; and thus able to witness those tragic circumstance where Meredith lost her life; with we suppose, her dignity and pride intact whilst defending her moral code to her very sad death.

And I don’t think there are very many people who are capable of murdering another human being in cold blood; that would later have the compassion for their victim, to accept their judicial punishment with any honour.

Are we so astute; so perfect in our understanding of all human nature; that we can deny a fair trial so casually, simply because we feel some personal empathy with the accused? Were it so easy to escape judicial punishment then we might all become victims to the villainous charms of deadly persuasion.

I trust European courts to be able to undertake a fair trial, and so publically before the eyes of the world, without lie or hindrance, and show only good legal practice throughout.

Amanda has been found guilty! We know she will never admit to her guilt publicly, so we must accept the court’s ruling, until such proof to the contrary.

May those 26 years be hard and enduring for the culpable!
