It was Halloween night and the football stadium was full, even though there was a light drizzle of rain.  A mother and her two young daughters, in their seats in section B, became disturbed by a man nearby who was wearing a scary “Luchador’s (Mexican wrestler’s) full head mask”

A deputy sheriff approached the masked man and instructed him to step into a stadium portal.  He was then asked to remove the mask. The man questioned this and the deputy informed him that masks were not allowed in the stadium.  The man removed the mask and requested that he be allowed to keep it, to which the deputy acquiesced.

A dispute subsequently arose over the man’s ticket seating location. Coupled with the mask violation and the ensuing argument with the deputy, the man was asked for identification and was then escorted by officers from the stadium.

This is a true story and was reported in detail by the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The place was Neyland Stadium on the University of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus.

The event was the contest between the UT Volunteers and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The man was State Representative Tracey Camfield, a Republican from Tennessee’s 18th District.  Camfield has recently announced that he is a candidate for next year’s race for the Tennessee District Seven Senate seat.

According to the Sentinel, Ron Leadbetter, a former UT associate general counsel who is running against Campfield for the senate seat, was asked about the incident.

“It’s not the kind of conduct you expect from legislative leaders,” Leadbetter said. “You’d expect a little bit higher conduct. I’m sorry to say I’m not shocked.”

The final score, by the way, was UT 31, SC 13
