Shocking many in the media who knew him, Robert “Joe” Halderman has been identified as the person behind the plot to blackmail David Letterman

He was arrested on Friday and charged with attempted grand larceny for threatening to expose Letterman’s affairs with several female staffers.  Police said that Halderman demanded $2 million from Letterman in the attempted extortion.

According to the New York Daily News, Halderman is an Emmy Award-winning producer who had been with CBS News for more than 20 years.  He is a  producer for the successful “48 Hours” CBS News show, and for more than 25 years he has been shooting, writing and producing news pieces.

On Thursday night’s “The Late Show”, Letterman described his experience and admitted the basis used for the extortion attempt. In an unprecedented television confession he exposed the alleged plot live before an audience of millions.

The News stated that Letterman appeared to be setting up a comedy bit when he began his extraordinary on-air mea culpa.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman told viewers. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury. This whole thing has been quite scary.”

All laughter subsided when Letterman began to admit to the audience that he “had sex with women who work for me on this show” and that he told authorities about the blackmail “to protect my family.”

Hey isn’t there some violations going on with david doing his staff? Or is CBS the new “Plato’s Retreat” of NYC.

Maybe someone should ask if Mr. Letterman should be allowed to work there. It seems like some civil rights are violated here of the women involved.

I do not think when I worked in New York I was allowed to sleep with workers who were under my watch. The hospitals would tend to consider that “bad behavior”. or more importantly reasons for dismissal.

Since Carson left late nights nothing is worth watching anyway.

At least Johnny had class and kept philandering outside the studios.
