Heads hacked off, a bite from a lion, tiger or bear, massive muscles on massive men — all clues that an ancient cemetery uncovered in northern England is the final resting place of gladiators, scientists have announced after seven years of investigations.
The archeological dig has found “what may be the world’s only well-preserved Roman gladiator cemetery,” the York Archaeological Trust said.
Scientists have found 80 skeletons in the “unique” cemetery under the city of York, northern England, since 2003.
They announced their discoveries on Sunday, ahead of a documentary about the site due to air in Britain on June 14. This was one of two big archaeological developments, with Israeli scientists announcing the discovery of a huge cache of ancient religious objects.
They first thought the graveyard might contain the remains of criminals or political purges.
But that doesn’t explain the teeth mark.
“One of the most significant items of evidence is a large carnivore bite mark – probably inflicted by a lion, tiger or bear — an injury which must have been sustained in an arena context, ” said Kurt Hunter-Mann, the lead archeologist on the dig.
“Nothing like them has ever been identified before on a Roman skeleton,” said Michael Wysocki, who examined the [...]

The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama charged Joran Van der Sloot Thursday afternoon with extortion and wire fraud, saying the Dutchman promised information on Natalee Holloway’s whereabouts in exchange for $250,000, reports CBS News affiliate WHNT in Huntsville, Ala.
Van der Sloot, who has been the main suspect in the Holloway disappearance in Aruba five years ago, was arrested Thursday in the murder of a young woman in Peru. Stephany Flores, 21, was killed in a Lima hotel Sunday.

Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch man once considered a suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, is being sought in connection with the murder of a woman in Peru, Peruvian police officials said Wednesday.
Authorities in neighboring Chile are on a manhunt for van der Sloot, who fled there, Chile Interpol Deputy Prefect Eugenio Buines Arevalo told CNN.
Police are searching for van der Sloot in border region accommodations and also customs and border checkpoints. Van der Sloot will be extradited to Peru if captured, according to Chilean authorities.
At a news conference in Lima, Cesar Guardia Vasquez, of the criminal investigations unit, said there is “incriminating evidence” linking van der Sloot to the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez. Her lifeless body was discovered face down in his hotel room – with multiple stab wounds.
The hotel room where Flores was found was registered in van der Sloot’s name, he said.
A hotel employee and a guest saw the pair enter the hotel room together at 5 a.m. on Saturday and police have video of van der Sloot and Flores together the previous evening at the Atlantic City Casino in Lima, he said.
Immigration officials say van der Sloot fled to Chile [...]

A thief stole five paintings possibly worth hundreds of millions of euros, including major works by Picasso and Matisse, in a brazen overnight heist at a Paris modern art museum, police and prosecutors said Thursday.
The paintings disappeared early Thursday from the Paris Museum of Modern Art, across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower in one of the French capital’s most chic and tourist-frequented neighborhoods.
The museum’s security system, including some of the surveillance cameras, had been broken for the past few days, according to a police official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is under way.
Christophe Girard, deputy culture secretary at Paris City Hall, confirmed that the security system was disabled at the time of the theft, and said a single masked intruder was caught on a video surveillance camera.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the intruder was operating alone, Girard told reporters, who suggested the heist was carried out by a very “sophisticated” team or individual. He said three guards were on duty overnight but “they saw nothing.”
The stolen paintings include: “Le pigeon aux petits-pois” (The Pigeon with the Peas) an ochre and brown Cubist oil painting by Pablo Picasso, was worth [...]

The South Korean navy ship, the Cheonan, was sunk by a torpedo, most likely from a North Korean submarine.
This is the conclusion of an investigation led by experts from the US, Australia, Britain and Sweden. The BBC reports that the team examined eyewitness accounts, damage to the vessel, evidence collected from the seabed and the injuries sustained by survivors and those who died.
The report said: “The evidence points overwhelmingly to the conclusion that the torpedo was fired by a North Korean submarine.
“There is no other plausible explanation.”
According to the BBC, the Cheonan went down near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border, raising tension between the two nations, which technically remain at war. The shattered wreck of the 1,200-tonne gunboat was later winched to the surface, in two pieces, for examination, the BBC added.
“This act of aggression is one more instance of North Korea’s unacceptable behaviour and defiance of international law,” said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, adding that it “only deepens North Korea’s isolation”.
He called the alleged attack “a challenge to international peace and security” and a violation of the armistice agreement which ended the Korean war.
In the meantime, the BBC reported, North Korea rejected the claim as a “fabrication” and [...]

The BBC reports that the head of the Catholic Church in Cuba says it is in one of its worst crises in recent times and people are openly criticising the socialist system.
Cardinal Jaime Ortega said that people were openly talking about the deficiencies in Cuba’s socialist system, calling it a Stalinist-style bureaucracy producing apathetic workers and low productivity.
“Our country is in a very difficult situation,” he warned. “Certainly the most difficult we have lived in this 21st Century.”
The 73-year-old prelate told a local Catholic newsletter, Palabra Nueva (New Word) that there was a national consensus that the government make the necessary changes “quickly”.
He also urged the Communist authorities to free all political prisoners.
According to the BBC, the global economic crisis, the continued US trade embargo, and recent hurricanes have all had an impact on the state-run economy.
Cardinal Ortega criticized US President Barack Obama for failing to restart a genuine dialogue with Cuba, and following his predecessors’ policy of demanding reforms as a prerequisite to end the trade embargo.

The recent memo from Defense Secretary Robert Gates to the White House warning that the United States lacks a long-term plan for dealing with Iran’s nuclear program has generated a bit of furor.
Sen. John McCain told “Fox News Sunday” that the memo was merely stating the obvious and that regardless of what’s being done about it the United States needs to do much more than just threaten to take punitive action against Iran.
“I didn’t need a secret memo from Mr. Gates to ascertain that,” he said. “We do not have a coherent policy… We have to be willing to pull the trigger on significant sanctions.”
Meanwhile, CNN reported that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday during an annual army parade that Iran is so powerful today that no country would dare attack it.
“Iran’s army is so mighty today that no enemy can have a foul thought of invading Iran’s territory,” the Iranian leader said, according to Iranian state media.
When asked whether a military option should be on the table, Sen. McCain said: “Every contingency has to be on the table.”

The United Nations Childrens Fund reports that a 12-year-old Yemeni child bride has died from internal bleeding, resulting from intercourse, three days after her marriage to a man at least twice her age.
Amal Basha, chairwoman of the Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights, a Yemeni human rights group, identified the girl Friday as Elham Mahdi.
According to Basha, Elham, who live in Yemen’s Hajjah province, was married on March 29 and died three days later.
The child’s death is the latest in a series of child marriage cases in Yemen where there is no minimum age for marriage.
Frustrated by the recent revelation, a Yemeni government official called the case “a stark reminder that the practice of underage marriage must come to an end.”
“The government has been working tirelessly to cement the minimum marriage age but conservative parliamentarians have stood against it,” said the official, who is not authorized to speak to the media. “Members of the conservative block need to step up to the responsibility of protecting the rights and freedoms of the young. NGOs must continue campaigning to shed the light on this unfortunate practice.”
In September, 12-year-old Fawziya Ammodi, who was forced into marriage, died along with her baby during a painful childbirth.

Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow Metro trains in the morning rush hour, killing at least 36 people.
The BBC reports that 24 died in the first blast as a train stood at the central Lubyanka station, beneath the offices of the FSB intelligence agency.
About 40 minutes later, a second explosion ripped through a train at Park Kultury, leaving another 12 dead, the BBC stated.
“I was moving up on the escalator when I heard a loud bang, a blast. A door near the passage way arched, was ripped out and a cloud of dust came down on the escalator,” an eyewitness named Alexei told Rossiya 24 TV channel.
“People were yelling like hell,” he said. “There was a lot of smoke and within about two minutes everything was covered in smoke.”
The FSB said it was likely a group from the North Caucasus was responsible.
The BBC’s Richard Galpin in Moscow says no group has yet said it carried out the attacks, but past suicide bombings in the capital have been carried out by or blamed on Islamist rebels fighting for independence in Chechnya.
In February, Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov said “the zone of military operations will be extended to the territory of [...]

Google appears certain to exit China as a search engine.
Google has drawn up detailed plans for the closure of its Chinese search engine and is now “99.9 per cent” certain to go ahead as talks over censorship with the Chinese authorities have reached an apparent impasse, according to England’s Financial Times.
While Google is seeking ways to keep its other operations in China going, some executives fear that a backlash from the Chinese authorities could make it almost impossible to keep a presence in the country.
When the search giant first promised to end censorship in response to what it claimed were a series of cyber-attacks mounted from inside China, many China-watchers warned that its public defiance of Beijing would provoke a stern response, the FT stated.
On Friday, Li Yizhong, minister for industry and information technology, said: “If [Google] takes steps that violate Chinese laws, that would be unfriendly, that would be irresponsible, and they would have to bear the consequences.”
“Our forecast has always remained firm that once Google announced it would not accept censorship, then it was nearly impossible to imagine a scenario either where Google didn’t act on that or the government accepted their position,” Mark Natkin, managing director of [...]

Releasing energy 500 times that of the recent Haitian tragedy, a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit south-central Chile early Saturday.
Reports thus far indicate that more than 65 have been killed and numerous buildings destroyed. Of serious concern is the resulting tsunami that potentially threatens the Hawaiian Islands.
Reuters reported that several buildings collapsed in the city of Curico and that there was damage to buildings in the historic center of the capital Santiago, about 200 miles north of the epicenter. The capital’s international airport was forced to close, a highway bridge collapsed and chunks of buildings fell into the street.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet urged people to stay calm. “With a quake of this size we undoubtedly can’t rule out more deaths and probably injuries,” she said.
According to Reuters, Saturday’s quake shook buildings as far away as Argentina’s Andean provinces of Mendoza and San Juan. A series of strong aftershocks rocked Chile’s coastal region from Valdivia in southern to Valparaiso, about 500 miles to the north.

In anticipation of a repeat of prior demonstrations, over the past weeks Iranian security officials have lashed out with massive arrests across the country in an effort to neutralize the political opposition and silence critical voices.
According to The New York Times, even though the government has refrained from arresting the principal leaders of the opposition, the category of people it has pursued has grown broader over time.
The Times reported that the ranks of those imprisoned now include artists, photographers, children’s rights advocates, women’s rights activists, students and scores of journalists.
“We don’t believe their detention has to do with any specific acts they have committed but for the ideas and ways of thinking they represent,” said Hadi Ghaemi, director of International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. “By detaining them en masse, the government is spreading fear and intimidation, implementing a sort of a reign of terror, to dissuade potential protesters from coming out to the streets on Feb. 11.”
Iran now has more journalists in prison than any other country in the world, with at least 65 in custody, according to Reporters Without [...]

Julia Lira, the 7-year-old named as Rio de Janeiro’s “queen of samba” is at the center of a bitter controversy in Brazil.
Lira, the newly minted drum corps queen for the Viradouro samba group is too young to take on the traditionally sexy role, say critics.
The girl’s father, president of the samba group, defends his daughter’s participation, saying, “Any man who looks at a 7-year-old child and feels any sort of excitement should go see a doctor.”
Given Brazil’s history of sexual exploitation of children, Carlos Nicodemos, director of the Rio de Janeiro state Council for the Defense of Children and Adolescents, says allowing the young girl’s participation “would increase the treatment of children as sexual objects in Brazilian society.”
“We’re not against kids participating in Carnival; it’s part of Brazilian culture,” Nicodemos said. “What we can’t allow is putting a 7-year-old girl in a role that traditionally for Carnival has a very sexual focus.”
Also in question is whether or not Julia can withstand dancing in the sweltering summer heat during the 80-minute parade route. At rehearsal, she was given water within 10 minutes of taking the stage, and looked tired after 20 minutes. Marco Lira says his daughter is a natural and [...]

You may be denied French citizenship if you wear a full Islamic veil or if your practice of radical Islam is deemed incompatible with French values.
Recently the French government refused to grant citizenship to a foreign national on the grounds that he forced his wife to wear the full Islamic veil.
According to the BBC, Immigration Minister Eric Besson said this was being refused because he was depriving his wife of the liberty to come and go with her face uncovered.
“It became apparent during the regulation investigation and the prior interview that this person was compelling his wife to wear the all-covering veil, depriving her of the freedom to come and go with her face uncovered, and rejected the principles of secularism and equality between men and women,” he said.
The BBC added that in 2008, a French court denied citizenship to a Moroccan woman on the grounds that her “radical” practice of Islam was incompatible with French values.
Last week, a French parliamentary committee proposed a partial ban on full veils and recommended that anyone showing visible signs of “radical religious practice” be refused residence permits and citizenship.

China has warned President Obama not to meet with the Dalai Lama in no uncertain terms.
“It will seriously undermine the foundation of Sino-U.S. political relations,” said Zhu Weiqun, a Communist Party official who is in charge of talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama. “We will take corresponding action to make relevant countries see their mistakes.”
“The president has made clear to the Chinese government that we intend to meet with the Dalai Lama. It has been his every intention,” Mike Hammer, spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters last month.
According to CNN, the White House has not set a date for such a meeting; however the Dalai Lama has speaking engagements scheduled in the United States in late February and in May.
If President Obama does personally meet with the Dalai Lama, he will stand tall and will receive accolades of appreciation from the world over for exhibiting courage against another threat from Communist China.

She is amazing her doctors, the 16-year-old choir girl who came close to dying but wouldn’t in the crumbled concrete graveyard of Port-au-Prince.
More than two weeks after the earthquake brought down her school — and a day after she was lifted from the ruins — Darlene Etienne was eating yogurt, talking and regaining her strength Thursday.
“We are very surprised at the fact that she is still alive,” said Dr. Evelyne Lambert, who is caring for her on a French hospital ship offshore.
Doctors say Darlene’s survival is medically inexplicable.
“We cannot really explain this because that’s just (against) biological facts,” Lambert told a news conference. “We are very surprised by the fact that she’s alive. … She’s saying that she has been under the ground since the very beginning on the 12th of January so it may have really happened — but we cannot explain that.”
One who didn’t seem surprised was the girl’s mother, a poor rice-and-vegetable peddler.
“I never thought she was dead,” Kerline Dorcant, 39, said. “I always thought she was alive.”
Why?
“It’s God” hearing a mother’s nonstop prayers, she added.

Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as “Chemical Ali” has been executed by hanging in Iraq.
Majid, who has been sentenced to death four times for genocide and crimes against humanity, was sentenced earlier this month for for ordering the gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988.
Iraqi jets sprayed the town with a mixture of mustard gas and nerve agents for five hours. About 5000 people died in the attack.
According to an Iraqi government spokesman, Majid was “executed by hanging until death,” and the execution “happened without any violations, shouting or cries of joy” in contrast to Saddam Hussein’s death on the gallows in 2006.
Majid, Saddam’s cousin, refused to express remorse at any of his trials, saying he was acting in the interests of Iraqi security.

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders, reports the Daily Mail.
Dr. Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: “It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action. It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.”
Dr Lal’s admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation.
According to the IPCC’s statement of principles, its role is “to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information – IPCC reports should be neutral with respect to policy.”

24-year-old Wismond Jean-Pierre rescued after 11 days trapped in rubble
CNN reports that French rescue workers pulled a 24-year-old survivor from the rubble of a hotel in Haiti on Saturday, 11 days after an earthquake devastated much of the country.
Wismond Jean-Pierre, who had no visible injuries but was severely dehydrated, was immediately loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Lt. Col. Christophe Renou, a rescuer with the French team, called the three-hour effort “a miracle” as he was briefly overcome with emotion. Other members of the team — assisted by American and Greek workers — were seen weeping with joy following the rescue.
“This is God,” Frank Louvier, the chief of the French rescue team, said as he pointed to the sky.

The already devastated Haiti was struck this morning by a second earthquake measuring 6.1.
According to the U.S Geological Survey, the quake was centered 26 miles north-west of Jacmel, and struck at a depth of 13.7 miles.
Witnesses say that terrorized people ran from shaking buildings into streets strewn with debris from last week’s 7.o quake in Port-au-Prince.
The extent of additional damage or injuries caused by the latest disaster was not immediately clear.

“We have already collected around 50,000 dead bodies,” Haitian Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime told Reuters. “We anticipate there will be between 100,000 and 200,000 dead in total, although we will never know the exact number.”
Reuters reported that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was heading to Port-au-Prince on Saturday to meet with Haitian President Rene Preval at the airport. Her plane was to bring in supplies and return with evacuated Americans.
“We will also be conveying very directly and personally to the Haitian people our long-term unwavering support, solidarity and sympathies,” Clinton said.
The Pan American Health Organization said at least eight hospitals and health centers in Port-au-Prince had collapsed or sustained damage and were unable to function, Reuters stated.

A major earthquake estimated to have killed thousands of people, has shattered Haiti.
According to Reuters, Tuesday’s 7.0 magnitude quake, the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years, was centered only 10 miles from the capital, Port-au-Prince. About 4 million people live in the city and surrounding area.
The quake toppled the presidential palace and thousands of hillside shanties were scattered amongst the debris.
“The whole city is in darkness. You have thousands of people sitting in the streets with nowhere to go,” said Rachmani Domersant, an operations manager with the Food for the Poor charity. “There are people running, crying, screaming.”
U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy said the main U.N. building in Port-au-Prince had collapsed. “We don’t know how many people were in the building,” he told reporters.
Reuters reported that some 9,000 U.N. police and troops are stationed there to maintain order and many countries were trying to determine the welfare of their personnel.

Masoud Ali-Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian professor in nuclear physics, was assassinated Tuesday morning as he left his home in Qeytariyeh north of Tehran.
According to Iran’s official news agency, IRIB, Ali-Mohammadi was killed in a blast after a booby-trapped motorcycle exploded when he was going to open the door of his car. The explosion was remotely controlled, said IRIB.
Iranian security officials immediately accused Israeli and US spy agencies as sponsors of the assassination. In light of the accusations, it is interesting to note that Ali-Mohammadi publicly backed opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi in the June presidential election, according to USA Today.

At least a dozen former Guantánamo Bay inmates have rejoined al-Qaeda to fight in Yemen, according to The Times of London.
The 91 Yemeni prisoners currently in Guantánamo make up the largest national contingent among the 198 being held. Although the Obama Administration promised to close the Guantánamo facility by January 22, it appears that this deadline will be impossible to meet.
Hani Abdo Shaalan, a Yemeni who was released from Guantánamo in 2007, was killed in an airstrike on December 17, the Yemeni Government reported last week. The Times reported that the deputy head of al-Qaeda in the country is Said Ali al-Shihri, 36, who was released in 2007. Ibrahim Suleiman al-Rubaish, who was released in 2006, is a prominent ideologue featured on Yemeni al-Qaeda websites.
Geoff Morrell, the spokesman for the Pentagon, said: “This is a large question that goes beyond the issue of transferring detainees. The bulk of the remaining detainees are from Yemen and that has been the case for a long time. We are trying to work with the Yemeni Government on this.”
According to US Government, figures released in May 2009, 74 of the 530 detainees in Guantánamo were suspected or known to have returned to terrorist activity [...]

The Chinese Health Ministry has announced that the H1N1 virus is rapidly spreading into China’s vast countryside.
“Outbreaks in Beijing, Shanghai, other large cities and in schools have seen an obvious decline, but the virus continues to spread into villages and communities,” the ministry said.
The BBC reported that The government has been especially worried as the country heads into the depths of winter and ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday in February, when millions of people travel back to their home towns — potentially taking flu with them.
“The risk of catching H1N1 will increase, and the virus prevention situation is still grim,” the ministry added. “It is expected that for the period to come the virus will spread briskly.”
According to the BBC, China is also concerned that not enough people have been vaccinated against the virus, and that the flu will be hard to control once it reaches the poor and underdeveloped rural hinterland, where most the country’s 1.3 billion people live.
The Health Ministry emphasized that the Chinese government is rushing to send medical equipment such as respirators to 17 central and western provinces to “increase the overall ability to deal with severe cases.”

The peaceful protests in Tehran of the past few days have degenerated into violence with at least eight people killed, according to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council — making it the deadliest incident since June.
A video leaked to YouTube graphically shows demonstrators cornering a handful of riot police who were sent to combat them. The following narration is from CNN:
“As the crowd pushes the police against a wall — with screams coming from all directions — a protester points his finger at them. “Why are you doing this?” he yells. One of the police — the only one whose helmet is off, his face apparently bloody — responds. “I’m sorry,” he says. “I’m sorry.” The other police stand still, trapped by the crowd’s grasp.”
In the melee, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested. One of the country’s national security officials called openly for demonstrators to be rounded up and carted off.
According to CNN, videos posted online from Tehran show protesters with their heads covered in blood, in some cases requiring help walking from fellow demonstrators. Witnesses said members of the Basij, the government’s militia, were smashing protesters on the head with their batons.
The most significant essence of the videos is that they [...]

The “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign, which was stolen late last week from the front gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp has been recovered and five men in their 20s and 30s have been arrested.

Journalist Tomas Machala of CNN affiliate Polsat in the Polish capital Warsaw said Monday that the men were not neo-Nazis,in response to speculation at the time of the theft that the far right was responsible.
“They have some criminal background,” he said, noting they had been arrested for robbery and brawling in the past. He did not give their names, CNN reported.
The heavy iron sign “was removed by being unscrewed on one side and pulled off on the other,”police spokeswoman Agnieszka Szczygiel said.
Translated into German, the sign says “Work Sets You Free.”
According to CNN, Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, called the sign “the defining symbol of the Holocaust.
“Everyone knew that this was not a place where work makes you free, but it was the place where millions of men, women, and children were brought for one purpose only — to be murdered,” Hier said. “The audacity and boldness of this crime deserves the full attention of the Polish government.”

The funeral procession that attracted thousands of mourners in Qom, Iran, for a top Iranian cleric turned into another major protest against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his hard-line Iranian government.
Shouts of “death to the dictator!” loudly echoed outside the home of senior Iranian dissident Grand Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri, who died early Sunday. According to CNN, Montazeri was perhaps the most prominent Iranian cleric who publicly criticized the presidential elections last June.
His death is “a terrible blow for the (reformist) green movement and everybody who has been active these past few months,” said Mehrdad Khonsari, a senior research consultant at the Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies in London.
“He was a major thorn in the back of (Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei. He was a bastion for all the people opposing the excesses of the system,” even within the ruling establishment, he said.
Following the disputed elections in June, Montazeri dared to speak out with “minders” present in his office.
“Even I, who used to be a leading figure in the revolution, have not the right to speak out,” he said. “Authoritarianism will never last long. The gentlemen in power must submit to the wishes of the people, or they will be [...]

South Korean news agency, Yonhap, said on Friday that President Barack Obama has proposed setting up a liaison office in North Korea next year.
Reuters reported that this move is a step to ease tensions between the two rival states. Yonhap quoted diplomatic sources in Beijing as saying that the offer was in a letter for leader Kim Jong-il delivered last week by Stephen Bosworth, Obama’s first envoy to North Korea when he went to Pyongyang last week.
North Korea’s official KCNA news agency confirmed later that the letter from Obama to Kim had been handed to First Vice Minister Kang Sok-ju.
According to Yonhap, Obama said the liaison office could be established if Pyongyang ended its year-long boycott of the talks and returned in the next few months to the discussions with China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States.
Reuters stated the following:

The seizure of North Korean arms in the past week found on a plane in Thailand put the squeeze on Pyongyang by making it more costly for it to dodge an international dragnet when it sells arms, including missiles. It also increased the risks for its customers, analysts said.

But as the cash flow slows to a trickle, Kim may [...]

Swiss voters on Sunday approved a constitutional ban on the construction of Muslim minarets. The referendum passed with over 57% of the votes cast.
The minaret “is a political symbol against integration; a symbol more of segregation, and first of all, a symbol to try to introduce Sharia law parallel to Swiss rights,” Ulrich Schluer said in a telephone interview. According to the Los Angeles Times, Schluer is one of the leaders of the Egerkingen Committee, which authored the bill, and a lawmaker from the conservative Swiss People’s Party.
“When you look at the European Union, where are there extremists?” asked Schluer. “In the suburbs and ghetto banlieues of Paris and London. . . . We don’t want that in Switzerland.”
The Times reported that Youssef Ibram, the head of a large mosque in Geneva, was stunned by the vote. “I interpret this vote as the Swiss way of saying that the presence of Muslims here poses a major question,” he said.
The Swiss Federal Council, a seven-member executive body, said it respected the decision of voters and issued the following statement:
“Consequently, the construction of new minarets in Switzerland is no longer permitted,” it said, adding that the four existing minarets would be allowed to [...]
